The castle ruins can be visited free of charge at any time. Particularly worth seeing are the partially reconstructed round chapel and the stump of a round tower, both dating from around 1080. During the summer months, events such as open-air concerts and performances are frequently held on the grounds. A vineyard with over 500 vines, flowerbeds, and hiking trails have been created. There are also information boards at the pasture explaining its use. It's a good idea to utilize the former mining lakes in this way.

I did exactly what Dirk described. I took the train from Jena to Camburg and then cycled along the Zuckerbahn cycle path. After a slight climb, the path becomes very flat and has many crossings over more or less busy roads. Of course, there are also many bridges. Orientation was sometimes difficult, but my intuition helped. Zeitz is very beautiful, but finding the Elster cycle path to Gera from there isn't easy. Still doable. 😁 Highly recommended.

Beautiful cycle path with great views

There are some good, covered rest areas along the Zuckerbahn cycle path, and good asphalt. You're away from traffic. Otherwise, it's a typical railway cycle path…straight ahead and no view. Trees and bushes on the left and right. Practical. 😅

and don't forget to imitate the loud call of a steam train during the crossing :-)
