The heath is always worth a visit – not just during the heather bloom in August, when the landscape transforms into a glorious purple. The nature park stretches over 480 square kilometers between the heathland villages of Eschede, Hermannsburg, Müden, Unterlüß, and Winsen (Aller). The Southern Heath Nature Park offers protection to animals sensitive to disturbance, such as the crane and the black stork. Herds of Heidschnucke sheep (Heidschnucke sheep) take care of the landscape – they regularly nibble on the heather. Numerous hiking and cycling trails lead through the hilly heathland, which dates back to the Ice Age. The mill, as it can be seen today, dates back to the early 18th century. It, like the bakehouse, is located on the mill island. The bakehouse dates back to the 17th century and is still fully functional. Bread is still baked here at least once a year, for the traditional potato festival. The mill's core dates back to 1771. The half-timbered building was expanded in several construction phases, and two stories were added in some parts.
