This is a long, straight off-road path with changing surfaces (gravel, singletrack) between Ashwell and Melbourn, which is part of the Icknield Way. It is not particularly scenic, but you can get that continuing westward toward Letchworth.

The visual axis of the Lindenallee leads the view over to the picturesque Folly in the northern part. Between the "Serpentine Lakes" the "Japanese Bridge" connects the areas of the park. Behind it we climb up to the artificial ruins of the Folly and enjoy the view for a while before the early dawn drives us down the slope back to the entrance.

Follies were usually built just to show off the landowners wealth and are not ruins at all. This impressive one at Wimpole Hall was erected in the mid 1770s by the 2nd Earl of Hardwicke, Phillip Yorke. The showpiece gothic tower made for an extravagant place to entertain.

The grounds of the Wimpole Estate are open to the public. Although you have to pay to visit the house, hiking around the woodland and parkland is free. Follow the track from Ermine Street and turn left immediately before the railway bridge. The first part of the track is quite rough and can be muddy, so care needed, but it soon levels out for a great ride to Ashwell.

Ashwell Street Byway follows part of an old Roman Road. An unpaved grassy trail suitable for cycling (mtb or gravel bikes), horse riding or walking. Free parking, shops and coffe shop in Ashwell village; or cycle there on quiet local roads or bridleways from Baldock, Letchworth, Hitchin or Stevenage.
