5,810 meters of track remain from the Himmelmoor Peat Railway. Built in 1900, it was used to transport peat from the mining area to the peat works on the eastern edge of the moor, operating on constantly changing routes. Small diesel locomotives, some of which were built in-house, pulled the trains carrying the peat floes until mining ended in 2018. Since 2015, the Himmelmoor Peat Railway Association has offered tours on the remaining line. The association maintains the railway and the industrial facilities. Trains are also regularly used for renaturation work.

Peat cutting, i.e., the above-ground extraction of peat, is no longer economically viable today. Peat as a fuel has largely been replaced by other high-energy fossil fuels. Many large-scale peatlands suitable for industrial extraction have now been drained. New peat cutting areas are only permitted under strict conditions. Raised bogs have an important regulatory effect on the water balance due to the large amounts of precipitation they can absorb. The preservation of the original habitats serves landscape conservation and species protection, as most species of peatland flora and fauna are considered threatened or critically endangered. Bogs grow extremely slowly; an intact peat body increases in thickness by only one millimeter per year. It therefore takes a thousand years for a one-meter-high layer of peat to form. Thus, bog areas recover very slowly during restoration attempts.

A fantastically beautiful place. Especially early in the morning when you are almost alone. Almost everywhere is easy to drive to.

5月 23, 2024, Himmelmoor Feldbahn Trail
A highlight in the region. Actually too easy for MTB. But nice to look at and a really different surface under the tires. Unfortunately, the approaches on most tracks from Hamburg West are too boring/easy for MTB/Gravel. So I would recommend a touring bike.

I started from the Schönklinik Bad Bramstedt in December 2022 and ended up there again. Unfortunately I ended Komoot before arrival instead of finishing the break 🙈. That in advance. Otherwise, this is a nice loop that - if the second bridge is restored in 2023 as announced - could be reduced by half the km. The entire circuit could also be cycled. But then I recommend staying on the main path.

I've also been on a gravel bike. It's worked out. Nevertheless drive carefully and take the roots centrally.

The butterfly garden - this is a NABU Kisdorfer Wohld project with the aim of creating a near-natural garden with habitats for butterflies and other insects on 3 hectares of land. For example, a dwelling for forest lizards, which namely do not lay eggs, but give birth alive. In mid-November you don't get to see a lot of colorful things there (note to me: come back in spring), but it does have a magic ✨! Together with a round in the amusement park, it's always worth it.

This peat pile was built in the 1920s and was used in the Hasenmoor near Großenaspe until the 1970s. After the peat mining in Hasenmoor ended, this truck came to Himmelmoor with around 75 other trucks. The current structure of the lorry has a capacity of approx. 4.4 m3. The weight of the payload depends on the moisture of the peat. At medium humidity this could be up to 2.5 t. The excavator has extra wide chains for the soft peat soil. A typical peat train consisted of 6 to 10 trucks and was pulled or pushed by a diesel locomotive. Sand is carried on the trains, which is sprinkled on the tracks when the wheels spin in wet conditions. The wagons were coupled together with three-link dome chains. Here you can see the tilting device for the peat flowers in the peat factory. After unlocking the side wall, the lorry is raised hydraulically on a movable piece of track to an inclination of around 45 degrees. Clamps on the wheels hold the wagon on the tracks.

The butterfly garden is located in the Kaltenkirchen amusement park. Here the Nabu takes care of a natural garden to support the insects and plant species. You can come and garden on Wednesdays. A great idea. More information and helpful details or photos can be found here: https://www.nabu-kisdorferwohld.de/unsere-biotope/naturnaher-schmetterlingsgarten-kaltenkirchen/
