A first sign that you are coming closer and closer to urban ground, coming from the pennine trail. An old viaduct, still impressive and some 100 yards upstream you see the Latchford Locks.

The canal is a 36-mile waterway connecting the Mersey Estuary to the Port of Manchester, and Latchford Locks are a set of locks along this route, particularly in Warrington.

The viaduct was built by Arrol from wrought iron and spans the Manchester Ship Canal. The abutments and piers are constructed from sandstone and red brick, with a facade of blue bricks. The viaduct closed to passenger services in 1962 and closed to freight traffic in 1985, partially due to the poor condition of the viaduct.

Nice place for teas, coffees, hot sandwiches and snacks. Outside seating and a portaloo, fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

A cute little tunnel that is beautifully decorated with the scenes from the Alice in Wonderland story. 'Hats off' for the artist(s) who painted it so neatly.
