(205 km) – the longest in Britain! The Leeds & Liverpool Canal was built between 1770 and 1816 to connect the big industrial towns of Yorkshire and Lancashire to the port of Liverpool and America. It also connected to Hull and the North Sea via the Aire & Calder Navigation, and then to Europe and Africa.

Top lock amazed me how much it takes the narrow boats to get through. I can imagine it's a very hard thing to do, especially if you have 90 of them to pass

Liverpool Leeds canal can be quite bumpy if your on there for a while. Make sure you get some amazing photos

Really nice stretch of canal

Open at all times with many different access & exit points and a couple of small café refreshments shops actually on canal side but quite hard to spot

Great area to take in the beautiful scenery and many narrow boats dotted along the canal Open any time great for Runners & walkers too :)

A nice paved point of entry into Haigh Plantations from opposite Wigan Hospital

Beware brief shower as you exit/enter tunnel!!

The path here is far nice than staying on the canal path

A bit of local history beside st Wilfrid's church in Standish. Cafes and shops nearby in the small town centre
