Impractical for cyclists with deep mud & fallen trees

Wigan Top Lock is no. 65 on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal system. If you are cycling to Wigan in the southwest and like locks, then there are another twenty locks for you to look at in the next 2 miles (3.2 km), as the canal drops 200 feet (61 m) between here and Wigan. This is a super beautiful area to cycle in with all the locks and canal boats.

It also connected to Hull and the North Sea via the Aire & Calder Navigation, and then to Europe and Africa.

Top lock amazed me how much it takes the narrow boats to get through. I can imagine it's a very hard thing to do, especially if you have 90 of them to pass

Liverpool Leeds canal can be quite bumpy if your on there for a while. Make sure you get some amazing photos

The Lock & Quay is a traditional public house with a good food offer. It is located on the edge of Chorley next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal
