Beware crossing the bypass

The Wheelock Rail Trail near Sandbach follows the route of a disused railway from Ettiley Heath to Malkins Bank. Today the trail is a rich haven for wildlife and wild flowers and provides a pleasant level and wide route through the Cheshire East countryside.

Built in 1857, costing £2,500 and was constructed in the Gothic style. Ramsay MacDonald once addressed a meeting here.

Stretching over a 2 km span of pathway, the Wheelock Rail Trail offers a tranquil and car-free route. It runs in parallel with Trent and Mersey Canal, providing a seamless connection. Now a residential dwelling, Sandbach Mill was once a water powered corn mill, which was operated until 1947. The Roman road it is situated on, is thought to be 2000 years old.

Great spot to stop and rest with some wildlife nearby. Particularly goof for birdwatchers.
