The Eselsteig Trail is a narrow, historic path leading to the Emmerberg Castle ruins. It once served as a transport route for pack animals carrying supplies to the castle. Today, it's an idyllic hiking trail that winds through the forest and offers a beautiful, natural route to the impressive ruins. A worthwhile climb for anyone who wants to combine history and nature.

The Emmerberg Castle ruins are located on a ridge near the Prosset Gorge and are among the historic fortresses of Lower Austria. First mentioned around 1170, they served as an important defensive point on what was then the northern border of the Carantanian March. Although they were never militarily tested, they were inhabited until 1760 before they began to decay – triggered by the sale of the roof structure. Although the ruins are now inaccessible for safety reasons, their imposing remains and picturesque location make them a fascinating sight.

Engelsberg (568 m) is a beautiful hiking destination with magnificent views on both sides of the ridge. The hike is quiet and tranquil—ideal for relaxed conversations, families, or older hikers. The panoramic view over the Steinfeld and Hohe Wand mountains is particularly impressive. However, in wet conditions, the descent is steep and slippery, so caution is advised. An idyllic spot for nature lovers who want to enjoy the tranquility of the forest.

Near Engelsberg, you'll find a fantastic view of the Hohe Wand. From this tranquil vantage point, you can admire the impressive rock formation in all its glory. It's an ideal place to enjoy nature and take in the panoramic views.

The Engelberg Cross stands above the marble quarry, but not directly at the summit of Engelsberg. From here, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the stone field and the surrounding area. Not far from the quarry with its striking red marble, this vantage point is a worthwhile destination for hikers who want to combine a short rest with impressive views.
