Nice little centre to find out more about the area

Carsington Water is a reservoir managed by Severn Trent Water. Its main objective is to allow them to manage the flow of the River Derwent. During the winter and at times of high flow the river water is piped into the reservoir, the water is then released at times of lower flow to maintain the supply and river levels all year. Plans for the reservoir started in 1960 and construction started in 1979. A collapse of the partially constructed dam in 1984 set the project back and it wasn’t completed until 1992. Today there are nice walking trails with wooden sculpture all around the reservoir. There is a visitor centre and RSPB shop and wildlife reserve. The Carsington sailing club also uses the lake and it's popular with fishing people.

Hall Wood and Middle Wood are attractive native woodlands found on the North-eastern shore of Carsington Water, with a good quality track running through them.

Great quality paths and fantastic views await you at Carsington Water.

If you need a breather on the way round, someone has thoughtfully installed a carved wooden armchair in the middle of a field for you to rest your legs and take in the view.

Carsington Water is the ninth largest reservoir in England. When full it can hold 7,800 million gallons of water. The reservoir has good quality tracks around it to enjoy the good views and wildlife.

The strong winds are very powerful across the dam wall. Those who cycle with children may want to use the road for the dam wall section on these occasions.

this side of the lake can get hard on your legs if your out off form/out of practice - take a break at the sculpture. really good ride for both gravel bike and XC bike going around this reservoir.

really good ride experience going around carsington - the east side is packed with short climbs n downs, west side is mostly flat with refreshment stops. the main visitor centre is pricey compared to the other options

Carsington Water is a reservoir operated by Severn Trent. It takes water from the River Derwent during high flow in the winter along 10km long tunnels. the road around the edge is nice to ride although some cars are a bit quick. Café and toilets at the visitor centre.
