The original village of Edensor was located immediately next to Chatsworth House, but between 1838 and 1842 the 6th Duke of Devonshire had it demolished so it would be out of sight over a hill. The planning of the new village and the parish church was overseen by Joseph Paxton. The church was built for the 7th Duke of Devonshire. Consecrated in 1870, St Peter's comprises a west steeple, nave with aisles, chancel, north vestry and south east chapel. A 2020 report states that the current church with its 166-feet-high spire, designed by George Gilbert Scott, was not built until about 25 years after the village was completed. It was a "replacement for the original squat-towered church that had occupied the site previously". Derbyshire Council states that "Edensor Church was taken down and rebuilt in 1867, incorporating some of the old Norman" church. Another source specifies that "very little remains of the Norman church".

The scenery is absolutely breath taking. Worth the effort of getting up there and running on uneven surface. ))

Wellington's Monument location is actually "Blackstone Edge". While not named as such on OS maps, it can be found on older maps and is shown on a Peak & Northern Footpaths direction signpost below Baslow Edge. Doesn't stop it being a great area for walks though! 👍

The monument is dedicated to the Duke of Wellington for his victory at the battle of Waterloo in 1815. The cross stands proud at the southern end of Baslow Edge above the tree filled Bar Brook valley. Nice views from here west over the Derwent valley towards Longstone Moor.

Baslow Edge is a small gritstone edge that forms a continuation of the Froggatt - Curbar edge but south of Curbar Gap road. Great views from the edge in particular looking west over Curbar village and the Derwent valley.

Froggatt Edge is a gritstone escarpment with an amazing path along the top. Run from the north it's slightly downhill and brilliant fun although it does get busy sometimes. If you carry on this edge turns into Curbar Edge further south.

The Headstone Tunnel is the longest of the tunnels on the Monsal Trail at 490 metres long. It adds an unique experience to the trail, and gives you a break from the weather at the same time!

The Three Arch bridge was based on an Italian prototypes, for example, the Roman bridge at Rimini in Italy. Completed in 1761, the bridge carries the main drive over the River Derwent up to Chatsworth House. The bridge was carefully angled so as to be seen from the house and orientated in such a way as to provide a striking view to the house from the entrance drive. The bridge succeeded in fulfilling the design brief.

Grindleford is located by the spectacular gritstone edges of the Dark Peak. With nearby rocky tors, woodland and heather, there's plenty to explore.

Three Arch Bridge, which was started in c.1759 and was completed by 1761, it carries the main drive over the River Derwent up to the house.
