Hall in Tirol - Old Town One of Tyrol's most beautiful towns awaits those embarking on a journey of discovery to the medieval town of Hall in Tirol. One of the best-preserved old towns, and also the largest in western Austria, it forms a successful symbiosis with modern architectural concepts such as the salt warehouse, the UMIT university, and the Parkhotel. The tasteful buildings of Hall's old town bear witness to its past as a prosperous city: In the Middle Ages, salt production made Hall the most important economic center in North Tyrol. At that time, the town was a crucial transshipment point for trade on the Inn River, and the princely mint, established in Hall in the mid-15th century, contributed significantly to its further economic growth. Hall in Tirol Town Hall The Hall in Tirol Town Hall is considered one of the most important buildings in the town. It is one of the few town halls from the Middle Ages that have largely been preserved and are still used as town halls today. It is a former "town castle" that was built at the beginning of the 14th century. The western part of the current building has been preserved from this period. In 1453, the building was expanded through a reconstruction. In 1485, the town had five more shops built at the town hall to complement the ten shops for craftsmen and grocers in the moat, which were subsequently leased. An adjacent orchard, which came into the town's possession with the town hall in 1406, served as a market square for the annual fairs. The town hall had a small room for the town council meetings and a large room for festivities.[1] The beamed ceiling of the council chamber, which is now one of the most popular wedding halls in Tyrol, dates back to 1492. There are coat of arms reliefs on the outer walls of the building. Historic old town Hall in Tirol One of the best-preserved old towns in Austria stretches around the upper town square of Hall in Tirol. Around 10 km from Innsbruck, Hall in Tirol invites you on a journey into the Middle Ages. Here, around the central town square, towers rise, winding alleys lie and venerable town houses adorn the townscape. Today, Hall in Tirol is much smaller than Innsbruck and a wonderful place for a day trip or a few days between culture and nature. A few centuries ago, however, it was clearly superior to Innsbruck: at that time, mining was carried out here. From the 13th century, salt was mined around Hall and brought to Lake Constance on the Tyrolean Salt Road. The white gold made the town a town in 1303. The salt warehouse is still called the event center of Hall today. In 1477, Archduke Sigmund finally moved the princely mint from Merano to Hall in Tirol: The Hall Mint Museum and the Hall in Tirol Mining Museum tell of these times today. In the middle of Hall's old town you will find the Upper Town Square. All around it are the tower of Hasegg Castle with the Hall Mint, a landmark of the town that can be seen from afar, the town hall and the Gothic parish church of St. Nicholas. This square is considered one of the most beautiful inner-city squares in Austria. Then there is the Stiftsplatz with the Sacred Heart Basilica and the All Saints Church, which is the first baroque church in North Tyrol. Small shops and cafés in the middle invite you to take a rest in the sun. Hall has also been a university town since 2004.
