It is one of the few town halls from the Middle Ages that have largely been preserved and are still used as town halls today. It is a former "town castle" that was built at the beginning of the 14th century. The western part of the current building has been preserved from this period. In 1453, the building was expanded through a reconstruction. In 1485, the town had five more shops built at the town hall to complement the ten shops for craftsmen and grocers in the moat, which were subsequently leased.
