9月 21, 2025, The Pilgrimage of Grace Heritage Trail
The Pilgrimage of Grace heritage trails commemorate a historic Yorkshire rebellion against Henry VIII, which was ignited by the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536. An interesting aspect of the trail is how it reveals the surprising scale of this rebellion and the local alliances that temporarily defied the king. The main 8.75-mile trail connects the villages of Warter and Pocklington.

9月 21, 2025, St. James' Church, Nunburnholme
Home to an Anglo-Saxon cross-shaft that was discovered in 2 pieces and reconstructed incorrectly in the 1800s, so that it is mis-aligned. The shaft contains Anglo-Saxon carvings (biblical scenes, such as the Adoration of the Magi, as well as figures of Christ, the Apostles, and what may be a Celtic Christian missionary), and Viking era carvings showing Norse influence (such as a possible representation of Odin with his ravens).

2月 2, 2025, Goodmanham Mill House
Now a private dwellinghouse that was originally a paper mill, but was converted to a corn mill in the 1810s. A windmill was incorporated between the watermill and mill house to deal with the unreliable water source. Both mills were demolished in 1940. Old photos (date unknown) available at https://catalogue.millsarchive.org/goodmanham-mill

2月 2, 2025, Londesborough Park Deer Shelter
Compact and picturesque parkland that used to be part of the Archbishop of York's manor of Everingham in 1086. As you cross the park you will find it hard to miss the slightly unusual arcaded deer shelter (see photos and https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1000924?section=official-list-entry)

2月 2, 2025, All Saints Church, Londesborough
Very quiet village, the church stands opposite a row of quaint cottages, and the whole vista is quite picturesque even in winter. Couple of interesting historical summaries of the church, detailing the Anglo Danish cross head can be found at https://www.nationalchurchestrust.org/church/all-saints-londesborough , https://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=31124

1月 26, 2025, St. Helen's Well
Natural spring and restored well - information board gives a good background to the site. Lots of ribbons tied on a tree for good luck, which is very reminiscent of the tanabata festival in Japan. The spring that feeds this well also causes the trail to become flooded and boggy in winter several metres past the well (heading east away from Market Weighton).

1月 26, 2025, Hudson Way Poetry Bench
Maybe someone with greater knowledge of poetry than me (not difficult, I know nothing about it 😊 ) will be able to read, decipher and post an explanation here. I don't recognise the words so googled them, and the opening line "From dark to dark the bird flies through the fire-lit hall" bears an uncanny resemblance to the Venerable Bede's account of a council advising King Edwin of Northumbria whether or not they should convert to Christianity. See https://englishhistoryauthors.blogspot.com/2015/12/a-sparrows-flight-through-king-edwins.html, or https://www.ccel.org/ccel/bede/history.v.ii.xiii.html

1月 26, 2025, Rifle Butts Quarry Nature Reserve
Maintained by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Rifle Butts Quarry was created to provide stone for the construction of the railway line adjacent to the nature reserve. The site was then used as a rifle range from the 1890s to the First World War.

This footpath just outside Nunburnholme travels through fields of farmland alongside Singleton's Wood. Not only does the path showcase gorgeous views across the Yorkshire Wolds, but it extends its reaches to the nearby town of Pocklington. On a clear day, keen eyes may even be able to make out the blue clock face on the town's church. In the spring months, the fields come alive with yellow as the rapeseed flowers begin to bloom.

8月 26, 2022, All Hallows Church, Goodmanham
Small historic church in the Goodmanham region. Due to being close to a road not much sitting area next to church but there is closer to the junction.

Peaceful spot around the Shiptonthorpe area. Few benches around to sit and relax and take in the quietness.
