Fantastic ride along the mighty Waikato, perfect for a cruisy Sunday morning ride

Cruisy trail with fantastic views over the mighty Waikato

Right in the middle of Waihi and across the road from the Waihi iSite is the Cornish Pumphouse, short walk up to the pump house will give you views across the enormous Martha Mine.

Excellent waterfall only a 50m from the road. Looks best in the winter after rainfall.

There are clean toilets here.

Start of the Hauraki Rail Trail and the Goldfields historic railway.

Watch the path here as it can be quite steep coming up to the road bridge to cross the road. This almost acts as a marker. After which (travelling north) the landscape becomes much more rural. (The views of the sky open up and are amazing). Just before the bridge are a row of very tall trees which are awesome to cycle through in the shadow of the evening light.

Beautiful view over the Awa before coming back into Kirikiriroa proper.

The parking lot is located right next to Huka Falls. Hiking trails and designated cycling routes also start from here. We found that it's worth getting there early. Tour buses arrive around midday, and it quickly becomes crowded and confusing.

We arrived about 10 minutes before the scheduled opening time for the dam and discovered that it had already been opened. Apparently, the times aren't strictly adhered to. Unfortunately, we and many others missed the spectacle.

Hikers' parking lot, possibility to book a speedboat tour or just take a rest. A small cart sells coffee and cold drinks. From here you can get to the viewing points if you want to watch the dam opening.

I stayed at the old racecourse with a camper van group. It was my second ride to the tunnel Bring a torch or bike light, the over head lights help but are yellow, many people walking and don’t have a light. They just appear out of the darkness. The trail is loose gravel with many cattle stops and narrow bridge’s,Komoot gps was really helpful ,the entrance to the trail was hard to find. But the gps guided me well. My bike is a 20 inch wheel with fat tires a folding bike ,it actually rides the loose gravel better than the worn part used by so many riders.

It is impressive how the water masses force their way through a narrow rocky channel.

By now the gravel section has started and will continue in various sections for the remainder of the route. The gravel alternates between compact and very loose, so good to keep close attention to the changing surface.

Reaching the top of the hill and looking back over the bay is a great reward for reaching the top. One of many stops along the road, it's hard not to with so many beautiful views to look at.

The bendy nature of this road helps the incline to be a lot koner, but still get the best of all views.

Rising out of Raglan inland to begin the Karioi circuit. This climb on Te Hutewai Road is awesome, with each hair pin offering a new and awe-inspiring view.
