11月 14, 2025, Thornton Beck Footbridge
The bridge lies on the forest track that runs north from Ellers Wood, just before reaching Dalby Forest Drive. It’s part of a well-used walking route connecting Thornton-le-Dale, Ellerburn, and Low Dalby,

8月 20, 2025, The Bridestones
The Bridestones are the remnants of a sandstone cap, deposited during the Jurassic period, some 150 million years ago. The formations consist of alternating layers of hard sandstone and softer calcareous layers. Erosion by wind, frost, and rain over millennia has created the unique and bizarre shapes seen today. The term "Bridestones" may have originated from the Old Norse words "brink-stones" or "edge stones" The Bridestones are steeped in folklore and legend, connecting them to ancient cultures and mythical beings. Some legends suggest the Bridestones were ancient meeting places for Druids, while others tell tales of giants who once roamed the moors. One legend speaks of a young couple who eloped and found shelter among the rocks, whose love caused the stones to form a protective arch. Another story tells of Nan Moor and Jack Stone, guardians of the stones, who lived in a rock house and were possibly married there. The Bridestones are sometimes associated with the Celtic goddess Brigantia.

8月 20, 2025, Skelton Tower Viewpoint
A ruined two-story structure built around 1830 by Reverend Robert Skelton, the rector of Levisham. It was initially used as a shooting lodge and possibly as a retreat for Skelton to write sermons or enjoy quiet drinks. Situated on Corn Hill Point, a grassy headland overlooking Newtondale, there are fabulous views of both Cropton Forest and the NYMR.

5月 26, 2025, Kirkham Priory Ruins
The remains of this Augustinian priory include a gatehouse adorned with the De Roos family heraldry. You can also learn about the priory's role in World War II, including Winston Churchill's secret visit and its use in training and testing for D-Day.

5月 26, 2025, River Derwent and Kirkham Priory Ruins
The section between Howsham and Kirkham is scenic, surrounded by mixed deciduous woodland, the river is home to white-clawed crayfish, brown trout, and water voles, and there are great vantage points from which to view the weirs at Howsham Mill and Kirkham.

11月 19, 2024, Crosscliff Viewpoint
One of many viewpoints along the route that runs from Saltergate Car Park along Old Wife's Way, passing Newgate Brow and Crosscliff Brow on the way to Jerry Noddle. An easy and worthwhile route to follow. Great quality track and quieter than the middle of Dalby Forest, allowing access to Langdale Forest if you are planning on covering some extra distance.

8月 10, 2024, Gormire Lake
Meaning "filthy swamp", there are many local legends and myths surrounding this lake, such as it is bottomless (it is 6.5m deep) and was created by an earthquake that swallowed a village resulting in the lake today (it is a glacial lake).

8月 10, 2024, Kilburn White Horse
Large car park under the White Horse, £2.50 all day as at July 2024. Free parking in a smaller off-road car park on Osgodby Bank at the southern end of Hood Hill Plantation. Very steep steps up to the top, but there is a metal handrail that alternates from the left to right side of the steps. Fabulous views from the top, although as others mention, you can only really see and appreciate the horse from the bottom of the bank.

8月 10, 2024, Hood Hill Plantation
Free parking on Osgodby Bank to the south of the plantation. Plenty of broad tracks and narrow paths to choose from, with some steep gradients and access up to the Kilburn White Horse.

6月 10, 2024, Rievaulx Abbey
Interesting for their sheer size alone, the old remains of the abbey also have an air of transience about them. Only the sometimes horrendous entrance fees prevent people from taking a closer look at the remains of the walls. It would certainly have been interesting.

5月 20, 2024, Abbey Bank Wood Path to Wass
Abbey Bank Wood is the wood that time forgot. If you are descending into Wass from the Snever Observatory, but are not following the public footpath per the OS map, and instead following the numerous tracks to the south of Blind Side Gill, then be aware that these are not standard plantation tracks, they are woodland rabbit tracks that look as though they have been undisturbed for quite a long time. No sounds of any human activity anywhere, lots of Muntjac deer and birdsong, very peaceful and feels a million miles away from civilisation, when you are actually only a mile or so from Wass.

5月 20, 2024, Mount Snever Observatory
The permissive path from Oldstead towards the southwest is well signposted, but is very steep at 22%. Might be OK if you are fresh, but have to admit it is a real struggle after 15 miles hard hiking in 21 degree sunshine! Alternative is to use trekking poles, or approach from the woods to the east and then descend the woodland track to Oldstead, which would have been easier.
