歴史：かつてBuitenlandは沼地でした。何世紀にもわたって、堤防が築かれ、土地が造成されました。「Buitenland」（「Buytenland」または「Buijten landt」とも呼ばれる）という名前は、おそらく沼地から堤防の外側に造成された土地を指しています。 1845年まで、この地域はほとんど人が住んでいませんでした。さらなる干拓の後、家族経営の刺激を受けて、集落は居住地域へと成長しました。この集落には教会も学校もありません。今日まで、生物学的に価値の高い地域であり続けています。

The Weert quiet area is nestled between the Scheldt River and an old branch of the Scheldt in Weert. In the 13th century, the six-kilometer-long river was closed off and is now a quiet area par excellence.

A beautiful, hidden, shady spot where picnic benches invite you to relax near the Old Scheldt Arm. This tributary of the Scheldt was closed off in the 13th century.

The Vuurkouter is a 28-hectare nature reserve. It was formed by old flooded clay pits... and is therefore not a wetland, as the original name of this highlight suggested. Natuurpunt purchased almost 7 hectares of the area. You'll see the beautiful large pond where numerous dead trees stand out in a very remarkable way, and a large brickworks chimney rising from the water. The attached building is completely submerged. A very special reminder of times gone by. Visitors can explore the Vuurkouter via the slow-moving road "Oeverdam," which connects Steendorp with Rupelmonde.
