Before World War II, ships were loaded and unloaded at Wilfordkaai by men known in Temse as "kaailopers." Between loading and unloading, they passed the time by simply doing nothing. The term was also used for men who spent a lot of time on the quay. Some have lived on in our memories as legendary folk figures. Three figures in this sculpture group are based on real people. The fourth symbolizes all quay walkers. Valeer Peirsman completed this bronze artwork in 1991.

The 1955 bridge caused considerable traffic congestion, a problem largely resolved since 2009 by the construction of a second parallel bridge.
