Beautiful bike ride, well-prepared paths, not busy

Ideal for cycling on this safe track, approximately 45 km between the two towns

Over the centuries, the church has been restored and expanded many times. The oldest part of the church is the early Gothic square crossing tower made of Tournai limestone. The tower dates back to the 13th century. During both world wars, the church suffered considerable damage, mainly due to its location near the strategic Schipdonk Canal. The exceptionally rich interior of this parish church includes a richly carved pulpit from 1868 by P.J. De Cuyper. Listed as a protected monument in 1946. Source: information board on site

Contrary to what the name "museum" suggests, this isn't a building or a domain where you can wander around and admire all sorts of bicycles. No, they make "crazy" bikes (similar to the kind you can experiment with at De Lustige Velodroom in Blankenberge) that you can rent. There's also a drinks vending machine (at d'Oude Smisse).

The canal with many names: officially it is called the ‘Afleidingskanaal van de Leie’, it is often called the ‘Schipdonkkanaal’ or ‘Kanaal van Schipdonk’ and in common parlance people sometimes dare to speak of the ‘Stinker’. The latter name refers to the heavily polluted water in the canal as a result of flax retting in the Leie. It was precisely because of that polluted water that a siphon was built to prevent dirty water from flowing into the Ghent-Bruges canal. The Saint Martin's Church is centrally located in the village. This church has been regularly renovated over the past centuries, but the tower is made of Tournai limestone and dates from the 13th century. It suffered greatly during the iconoclasm. This results in 3 types of side facade: an 18th century northern brick wall, which contrasts sharply with the southern fieldstone of that time. After WWI, the western facade and the tower were rebuilt.
