In 2024, Argentinian street artist Pastel (real name: Francisco Diaz) covered the station wall with flax and poppy flowers. For a trained architect, Pastel has a remarkable passion for flowers. Like any good architect and street artist, he first considers his surroundings before tackling a wall. These local flowers create a beautiful oasis of color, a striking image that can be read by everyone, from train passengers to pedestrians and motorists. Meanwhile, the old leather factory, which seemed doomed to disappear, is living a new life as the only (!) Flemish tannery operating according to traditional methods, using ancient tools. Hides are put through various tanning processes in large rotating drums. Most of the machines are older than the tannery itself (and certainly the tanners :-) ) and were purchased secondhand. Besides presses for dry pressing, grinding and planing machines to sand hides to a uniform thickness, and softening machines to soften the leather, there is also a spraying machine for dyeing. Johan Lefevre is your host and will guide you for two hours, from animal hide to leather product. His specialties are ostrich handbags and wallets. In a small shop, you can also buy shoes, belts, and sheepskin and other leathers. The location also houses a shop with exclusive Spanish wines. Groups of 10 or more can visit the factory.
