Born in Ghent (1866), the sculptor George Minne moved to Sint-Martens-Latem in 1898. He brought the first Latem group of artists under his wing: the painters Albijn Van den Abeele, Valerius De Saedeleer, Albert Servaes, and Gustave Van de Woestyne. This became the group of mystical symbolists, the so-called first Latem School. Many of his works can be seen in public spaces: King Astrid in Antwerp's city park, the Five Kneeling Youths on Emile Braunplein in Ghent, Bruges la Morte (a monument to Georges Rodenbach) on the square of the St. Elisabeth Beguinage in Ghent, a statue of Mother and Child on the Andries-Tuytschaever family grave in Petegem-aan-de-Leie, and so on. This last statue is very similar to the one that stands here on Minne's own grave, at the back left of the churchyard. The artist died in 1940, here in Sint-Martens-Latem.
