A walk through Mariënstede Park will undoubtedly lead you past the pond. From a clearing with a bench, you'll have a view of the Basilica of Our Lady (and not of "Mariënstede Abbey," as the original title of the highlight indicated; Mariënstede is a castle, not an abbey; Dadizele, incidentally, doesn't have an abbey at all; it does have a convent of the Sisters of Mary, located opposite the basilica).

This sculpture, titled "The Smallest Cheese Factory in the Country," is by Dadizele artist Willy Van den Bussche (1934-2025). It dates from 2000. Mariënstede, a facility for people with intellectual disabilities, has been making cheese in the small cheese factory in the castle since 1985—with a brief interruption. Ridder Jan is a Gouda made with fresh milk from a local farm... and is (therefore) now recognized as a 100% West Flemish regional product.

The Ledegemse Meersen area has two hiking loops: A smaller, elevated loop on a semi-paved surface that remains accessible year-round, and a larger loop that more or less follows the boundaries of the area. This unpaved path will be inaccessible during periods of high water. A wooden bridge crosses the Heulebeek stream, and boardwalks have been constructed. You can choose your own route by switching between the two loops.
