The building is located on the former site of the Heygendorf Garden, once owned by Caroline Jagemann, actress and mistress of Duke Carl August, later Frau von Heygendorf (1777–1848). Villa Haar was designed in 1885 by the architect Otto Minkert in the Neo-Renaissance style, modeled on the Villa d'Este in Tivoli near Rome, and built for the lawyer Werner Voigt in 1886. Today, the villa and its grounds offer a stylish venue for events. The garden is open to the public and invites you to linger.

The garden house on the edge of the park on the Ilm River was Goethe's first residence in Weimar in 1776. Here he wrote the ballad "Erlkönig"

The 48-hectare Park an der Ilm is a unique landscape garden on the edge of Weimar's old town. Duke Carl August and Johann Wolfgang Goethe realized their garden-artistic ideas here. They created a walk-in work of art with diverse landscapes, park architecture, and seating areas, which to this day serves as a place for recreation, education, and the aesthetic enjoyment of nature. The park is open to the public and free of charge.
