St. James's Church is perched on a hill above Tramin and is considered the town's most important artistic monument—and one of the most famous in South Tyrol. This small, prominently located church houses one of the oldest surviving Romanesque fresco cycles in the Alpine region. Created around 1220, the cycle in the chancel depicts extraordinary hybrid creatures, unique in their depiction. Where one might expect stone sculptures elsewhere, here a vibrant world of imagery unfolds on plaster: fish-people, bird-people, centaurs, dog-headed creatures, shadow-footed creatures, and other fantastic figures from the medieval imagination.
