The Castello di Avio, also known as Castello di Sabbionara (in older German texts as "Schloss Aue"), dates back in part to the 11th century and is one of the oldest fortifications in Trentino. It is located above the Vallagarina (German: Lagertal) in the municipality of Avio (district of Sabbionara d'Avio). Since 1977, thanks to a donation from Countess Emanuela di Castelbarco, the castle has been owned by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI) foundation. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castello_di_Avio A visit is a must! Once you pass through the entrance gate, you'll find yourself before a series of buildings, all surrounding a mighty 11th-century keep. Among these is the Palazzo Baronale with its numerous artistic treasures and the famous Stanza dell'amore, the Chamber of Love. Furthermore, there are five towers to admire here, including the so-called Picadora, from which those hanged once dangled. The entire complex is surrounded by a triple-layered, crenellated castle wall. Current prices, opening hours, etc., can be found here: https://fondoambiente.it/castello-di-avio-eng

Everything is wonderful! The climb to get there is beautiful, the fort is beautiful, and the setting is beautiful. Unfortunately, it's a bit sad to see such a structure in a state of total abandonment. It's worth it, whether by bike or on foot.

It is the classic fortress: massive walls, small windows, a moat to the north, south and west, a cliff to the east. Externally, it is well-kept; inside, it is unsafe, gloomy, full of passages, stairs, vaults and corridors. Very fascinating.

The Avio Castle is made up of a large complex that includes the 11th century keep, five towers, the baronial palace and the 13th century walls. It is one of the oldest and most original castles in Trentino, having belonged almost uninterruptedly to the noble Castelbarco family who during the Middle Ages transformed the fortress into a small feudal court, a destination for artists and intellectuals. Avio castle is among the best known and oldest fortified monuments in Trentino. It is located in the hamlet of Sabbionara and thanks to its imposing keep it dominates the Vallagarina.

defensive war building built in the early 1900s on the Austro-Hungarian border. Beyond the building which is in a state of abandonment, the climb to the fort offers a wonderful view of the Adige valley.

The construction of the fort was begun in 1888 with the aim of completing the defense line with the border with Austria-Hungary (located, approximately, where there is now the regional border between Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige, at the time Austrian territory). Completed in 1913, it was heavily armed during the First World War, but was used almost exclusively for the quartering of troops. In fact, he did not participate in any combat. Only a few shots were fired at the Austrian planes flying towards Verona with the aim of bombing it. Today the fort is private property and is in a state of partial abandonment. However, it is used as a tourist destination and playing field for soft air teams. (Source: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forte_San_Marco)

Beautiful double bend of the Adige with walls that gradually narrow towards the Ceraino lock. Double paved cycle path to the right (at higher altitudes) and left of the river.

“Actually, on September 13, 1786, the poet prince only wanted to sail past Malcesine from Torbole. But even then there were the famous sea breezes that surfers enjoy today. When the wind suddenly changed at noon and the Ora blew violently towards the boat from the south, Goethe had to make an emergency landing in Malcesine. In order to spend the time sensibly, he climbed up to the castle and began to sketch it energetically. But these unusual activities aroused the suspicions of the villagers, because the castle was a ruin, but still a military object. Could the stranger be an Austrian spy? At that time, the border between Venetia and the Habsburg monarchy was only a few kilometers further north. Only an Italian who happened to be there, who had worked in Frankfurt for a long time and was talking to Goethe about his hometown, was finally able to report to the mayor: 'Mr Podestà, I am convinced that this is a good, artful man, well educated, who travels around 'to teach himself.' Nevertheless, Goethe only stayed until the next day, and then at midnight, with the onset of the north wind Vento, he sailed on to Bardolino, where he continued his journey by mule to Verona. The episode, however, broadly rolled out in his 'Italian journey', carried the name Malcesine into high literature." “Lake Garda” travel guide by Eberhard Fohrer (Michael-Müller-Verlag)

"The marble plaque inscribed 'HINC J.W.GOETHE Id. SePt. MDCCLXXXVI ARCEM DELINEAVIT" on the corner of Via Castello 11 marks the place where Goethe drew the castle in September 1786 and thereby aroused the mistrust of the local population." https://www.hiwio.com/de/Article/Die-Scaligerburg-in-Malcesine-437

Malcesine is located on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, right at the foot of Monte Baldo. Around 4,000 people live in the community, whose silhouette is dominated by Scaliger Castle, which forms a very important part of Malcesine's history. The landscape, characterized by the surrounding mountains and the gentle shores of the lake, also provides a unique contrast that only a few other towns on Lake Garda can offer. Like many places on the north and east banks of the water, Malcesine primarily attracts wind and kite surfers. The reliably blowing winds always ensure a pleasant breeze outside the coast. Malcesine is divided into two districts, so-called fractions - Cassone and Navene. https://www.gardasee.at/orte/malcesine.html

Malcesine is a northern Italian municipality on the eastern shore of Lake Garda in the province of Verona with 3,689 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Malcesine is often referred to as the “Pearl of Lake Garda”. However, other places such as Riva del Garda or Limone sul Garda are often associated with this term. The place is heavily influenced by tourism. In addition to the towns of Riva del Garda and Nago-Torbole, Malcesine in the north of Lake Garda is popular with windsurfers, kite surfers and sailors due to its location, partly for getting started in the two main winds of northern Lake Garda, Pelér and Ora. From Malcesine, a cable car leads to the mountain station at 1,760 meters at Passo Tratto Spino in the Monte Baldo massif. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcesine

The fortress of Malcesine can be dated to the last centuries of the first millennium BC. Although there are some documents that state this castle was built sometime in the mid-first millennium AD. built by the Lombards. The castle was destroyed by the Franks in 590 AD and then rebuilt. In 806 it was the residence of King Pepin, who came to Malcesine to visit Saints Benigno and Caro, and after the Hungarian invasion it was part of the episcopal feud of Verona. From 1277 to 1387 it was under the control of Alberto della Scala's and his family. During this period, the Scaligeri renovated the fortress, which was henceforth called "Scaliger Castle" and was occupied by the House of Visconti from 1387 to 1403. Two years later it was placed under the rule of the Republic of Venice and remained under that control until 1506. When the castle was conquered by the Empire, the castle changed hands a couple of times: it belonged again to the Republic of Venice from 1516 to 1897, then to the French, followed by the Austrians who initiated significant fortification works inside the building and here from 1798 to 1866 remained. From that year it became Venetian property. On August 22, 1902, the castle was declared a national monument. Source: visitmalcesine.com/en/scaliger-castle-malcesine-gardasee/230
