There is a lock a few meters upstream. The Ottendorfer Au overcomes a height of 10 meters as it enters the Kiel Canal.

Opened in 1895, the Kiel Canal has lost none of its appeal: Every year, around 32,000 ships and around 10,000 pleasure boats use the popular federal waterway, which saves them the detour around Skagen. A total of around 85 million tons of goods have been transported through the canal. This makes the Kiel Canal, known internationally as the "Kiel Canal", the busiest sea canal in the world, ahead of the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal. Ships up to 235 meters long and 32 meters wide can pass through the canal.

The Kiel Canal connects the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. The foundation stone was laid in 1887 and the small double locks at Brunsbüttel and Holtenau were opened in 1895. The large double locks in Brunsbüttel and Holtenau were opened in 1914.

The noble estate of Wulfshagen is one of the late establishments in Schleswig-Holstein. It was founded just a few years before the construction of the baroque manor house by the widowed Magdalena von Thienen in Hütten, who moved her Gettorf farm to this location in 1673. As early as 1681, she had to sell her estate and the huts again and after a short period under Count Königsmarck, both estates came into the possession of Andreas Pauli, Imperial Baron von Liliencron (1630-1700), who had a manor house built in Wulfshagen in 1699. Pauli, Imperial Baron von Liliencron, was born a commoner and was the son of the merchant Paul Martens in Bredstedt and had a diplomatic career at the Danish court at an early age.
