Lonigo, an international city of wine, rises between plains and hills at the south-western end of the Berici hills. To the visitor it appears from afar with an unmistakable profile that completes the sinuous ridge of the Berici hills. Its forms are traced by historical architecture, symbols of a past to be discovered and admired which has nothing to envy of other much better known and visited centres.

The white wine of the same name, Soave, is named after the city. The place is said to have been founded around 500 AD by a tribe of the Suevi, from which the place name is derived. However, the area had already been inhabited during Roman times and was located on the important Roman road Via Postumia. The castle was first mentioned in documents in the 10th century. It belonged to the Sanbonifacio of Verona and passed to the Scaligeri in the 13th century. In the years that followed, Soave and its castle changed hands several times.

Beautiful city surrounded by imposing walls in perfect condition that completely enclose the historic center. Very well maintained by the local administration and it was not for nothing that it was awarded the most beautiful Borgo dei Borghi in Italy in 2022! Here the Soave wine is the master between cellars, wineries, taverns, etc. Not to be missed….

Many people only know the word Soave in connection with wine, which is generally true, but there is more! The wine route on which the small town is located was founded in 1999 and includes 13 communities. It is approximately 50 km long and runs at the eastern end of the province of Verona. With 24 D.O.C. growing regions, Veneto is the leader in Italy and it's hard to know where to start. with around 7,000 inhabitants - is framed by a completely preserved city wall with 24 towers. And no matter which direction you come from - the Scaliger Castle on the hill above the city is unmissable, right in the middle of the vineyards People settled here as early as the Stone Age and the Romans built a fortress to protect their rural districts. Today's city center was built under the Lombards and is therefore over 1,450 years old. Emperor Frederick I, known as Barbarossa (the one with the red beard), mentioned Soave as early as the Middle Ages around 1,200.

Found a small restaurant on the old city wall with really reasonable prices. Ate outside under umbrellas. I don’t want to advertise, but the restaurant is called “Trattoria alla Rocca” and it was very tasty 🤤

Lonigo, Province of Vicenza Lonigo is a northern Italian municipality (comune) in the province of Vicenza in Veneto. Lonigo or the district of Bagnolo is located on the Guà. The municipality borders the province of Verona. The municipality is located about 30 kilometers east of Verona and 30 kilometers southwest of Vicenza. The name of the municipality comes from the Roman family Leonici Flavii. The place was referred to as castro leunico and mentioned in documents as early as the 10th century. In the following centuries the towns of the area were under the rule of the city of Padua and the Republic of Venice. Text/Source: Wikipedia https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lonigo

Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore, Duomo di Lonigo Church of the Holy Savior Cathedral of Lonigo The Cathedral of Lonigo is the parish church dedicated to the Most Holy Redeemer of Lonigo in the province of Vicenza, built between 1877 and 1895 in neo-Romanesque style. The church was built on the site of the city palace, in place of the church of San Marco and the convent of Poor Clares. The idea of building a new church arose at the end of a procession held in 1855 to plead for deliverance from cholera and the need to expand the existing church. Palazzo Pisani, Lonigo The building, commissioned by the Pisani brothers, was built in 1556 on pre-existing factories. Architect unknown, tradition attributes it to Michele Sanmicheli, while dalla Pozza Andrea Palladio worked in the Villa Pisani factory in Bagnolo in those years, despite stylistic evaluations not confirming any of the above hypotheses. The building consists of two parts: a central and two side wings, built in the '700. The living body is developed on four floors, two of which are noble, a rare aspect for the architecture of the time, and are surrounded by the rustic ashlar that accentuates the edges. Access to the square from Via Roma is through the rustic ashlar fornix that occupies two floors of the entire building. The portal is surmounted by a double-arched three-light window with soft ashlar on the ground floor, trabeata with ashlar bands with balustrades on the upper floor. The monumental balustraded staircase with triple ramps allows immediate access to the ground floor on the north side of the building. Continuing the ascent with your eyes, you can see how each floor is marked by a double basal band on the windows, as well as two coats of arms between the frame of the ground floor holes. Piazza Garibaldi Lonigo Piazza Garibaldi is considered the heart of the historic center of Lonigo. It overlooks the Palazzo Pisani, now owned by the municipality and attributed to the Mannerist architect Michele Sanmicheli, who built it in 1564 as a picturesque city gate. On the opposite side is the Monument to the Fallen of the First World War, inaugurated in 1925, the work of Ettore Fagiuoli, famous Veronese architect and set designer for the Arena Opera Festival. Three white stone steps lead to the base of the monument, consisting of the large tanks of a fountain, the central body is decorated with marble cartouches containing the dedication to the fallen of the First World War and the coat of arms of the city of Lonigo. Four bronze eagles, accompanied by a garland of oak leaves, are laid at the foot of the pyramid-shaped obelisk. There is a five-pointed star on the top.
