It has a rectangular floor plan with three naves and a bell tower, which is attached to the left of the façade. The three apses, decorated with double arches, spires, and pilasters, remain from the original building on the outside; inside, the four capitals and the symbols of the Evangelists in the entrance area have been preserved. The bell tower was built in the 17th century by adding more storeys and remodeling a defensive tower in the northern part of the city wall, which reached approximately to the height of the church roof. Basilica of S. Giacomo, in the church square, slightly set back from the lakeside but in a dominant position. Splendid Basilica from the 11th and 12th centuries built by the Comacini masters. The Comacini masters were a corporation of bricklayers, plasterers, artists united in an old corporation that was born in the 6th century and was active in Lombardy, in the Canton of Ticino and some went as far as the Marches, Umbria, Germany and Denmark. Some of the most beautiful works of Lombard Romanesque can be traced back to them, in addition to the aforementioned basilica, that of S. Abbondio in Como, Santa Maria del Tiglio in Gravedona and some churches and minor works along the axis that leads from Como to Spluga, via Comacina.
