Europe's largest Waldrapp aviary in Waidhofen an der Thaya

The largest Waldrapp aviary in the world is located in Waidhofen an der Thaya. Feeding the Waldrapp is a unique experience. The endangered ibis species has found a home in Waidhofen. Here a foot and cycle bridge takes you over the Deutsche Thaya. As you cross, you have great views of the river.

Unfortunately, we were in a hurry, but this looks like a great place to take a rest and dip in the water. Thaya seems rather wide at this location, so it's probably a better swimming place than the one next to the old bathhouse a few km further north. Shuttle can take up to six bikes in one pass and it's up to you to pull it across the river.

Here you can observe Waldrapp birds right on the cycle route. You can even go into the cage through a sliding door. A Waldrapp bird looks very special!

In this small hut you can take a seat and treat yourself to a break in the middle of the green idyll. There is even a barbecue facility!

The pioneer footbridge is part of the forest nature trail in the Dobersberg Nature Park. Over a total of around one and a half kilometers you will learn everything about the Thayatal habitat on this informative educational trail.
