The historic centre/core of the city is accessible via four city gates. The gate names indicate the roads to the neighbouring cities and are, clockwise, Bassano to the north, Treviso, Padua and Vizenza. In the centre lies Piazza Pierobon with the main church of Citadella (Prosdocimo e Donato / 16th century). The city and its walls date back to Roman times, but really flourished and was provided with a wall in the 12th/13th century as an advanced fortress for the Padovans. In 1406 Citadella (like the entire region) came under Venetian rule until 1797 (hence the lion with an open book in the city square).

Porta Bassano located on the north side is quite impressive. This immediately brings you into the story of how a city could be closed off to enemy armies.

Porta Vicenza located on the western side of the city provides access to the city. The gate is characterized by three entrance arches. The tallest tower is 25 meters high. Beautiful example of medieval architecture.

Very inviting on warm days. Young and old will find refreshment here. Nice setting in the heart of Cittadella.

You can reach the Tourism office via stairs. This is also the only 'Entry point to the city walls'. By paying €5 you can enjoy another experience.

After paying €5 you can enjoy the beautiful views. The city walls, with its 32 towers, have a length of 1461 meters. Access to the walls is only possible via the tourist information point.
