Nice gravel ride, from Gessate to Cremona. 95% on paved cycle paths and dirt road in the woods along the Adda. The first stretch from Cassano to Lodi is very nice, all in the woods, several single tracks with tall grass or "cycle path" but with a dirt surface. The river is almost always nearby. From Lodi to Cremona all on paved cycle path, elevated on cultivated fields and more exposed to the wind. Stops in Lodi, Pizzighettone and Cremona for visits. Return by train.

Certainly the most beautiful place to stop on a tour of Curone.

The Esterle hydroelectric power plant, located on the right bank of the Adda River, began operating in 1914. It is dedicated to the memory of Carlo Esterle, Edison's managing director until 1918. The building, particularly known for its beauty, is constructed in a style derived from the eclectic Lombard tradition. The meticulous ornaments, the geometric and floral motifs, the columns and capitals at the entrance, the wrought iron street lamps and the imposing Gothic-style windows make it appear more like a villa than a real industrial building.

Be careful, it is forbidden to ride a bike from the top of the cypress trees. If the guards (who are looking through binoculars) catch you, you will be fined. In itself, it is worth going up on foot. The place is shrouded in legend. The hill of the cypress trees, a sort of natural sanctuary surrounded by 12 cypress trees. In 2001, through aerial surveys, a very bizarre coincidence was noticed. The area has 3 stepped pyramids, of equal slope, arranged quite close together, as if to simulate an astronomical observatory or a sacred-religious place. The first of the three pyramids is precisely that of the cypresses. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy a beautiful view, there is a sort of small stone altar and it is already a good place to take some photographs. Then you begin to gently descend along path 11 and you can reach the second of the pyramids of Montevecchia, the pyramid of Belvedere Cereda. It is a bare pyramid, very suggestive that allows you to observe the Curone park from the highest point. It is thought that the Celts used the pyramid as an astronomical observatory.

The Alessandro Taccani hydroelectric power plant is a work of architectural art located in Trezzo sull'Adda, along the right bank of the Adda river. Founded by industrialist Cristoforo Benigno Crespi, the plant has been generating clean and sustainable energy for over a century. Every year, it produces around 60 million kilowatt hours, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 24 thousand families. Behind her, the medieval castle of Trezzo, with its 42 meter high square tower towering above it.

Along the Adda, near the Edison power station, there is this old house now in very bad condition. Choreographic shot for fans of the urban decay genre

To be precise, the hydroelectric plant is called TACCANI (Treccani is the encyclopaedia) from the name of the designer. Alessandro Taccani (1876-1947) was a young graduate in industrial engineering from the Istituto Tecnico Superiore in Milan, when Cristoforo Benigno Crespi involved him to build his hydroelectric plant along the Adda. A great officer and knight of labour, the engineer Taccani was president of the consortium for the alienation of electrical materials left over from the war (1920-1924) and was commissioner for Italy at the Basel exhibition (1926). Taccani disappeared on 8 July 1947 at the Gavazzeni clinic in Bergamo.

"The Esterle power plant was particularly well looked after from an architectural point of view since it had to be representative of the Edison company that had built it. It appears more like a Lombard villa of delight than a real industrial apparatus. The effort was remarkable. integration of the building into the surrounding area, completed in the early years of the twentieth century, during the construction of the power plant.Today it represents a significant example of monumental industrial archeology and is known for its particular beauty. The building, built in a style derived from the Lombard eclectic tradition, consists of a large rectangular body with a gable roof inside which the engine room is located. It is characterized by meticulous ornaments, strictly repeated geometric and floral motifs. The columns and capitals at the entrance, the lampposts and the finely wrought iron eaves together with the impressive Gothic-style stained glass windows, make the building a precious architectural jewel. Inside, the walls and ceiling of the engine room were decorated with great care, as are the floors, street lamps, lamps and numerous wrought iron furnishings. In addition to the main building there are two adjacent volumes: the first, towards the river, constitutes the entrance to the engine room while the second, on the opposite side, is the arrival room of the penstocks. On the hill behind the plant there is a third body that encloses part of the loading basin and the inlets of the penstocks that feed the turbines. Personally, the Naviglio Martesana does not drive me crazy, but it is always a pleasant ride, especially in company. I prefer to follow it in the Cassano -> Milan direction when returning from a bike ride to the east. On weekends in spring and summer it comes alive and it is really impressive to see all these people cycling, running or spending time together.
