Hotel Fex, Val Fex A mountain hotel with grandeur: Hotel Fex is a jewel from the early days of alpine tourism. Built in the 1850s, it originally stood in the spa complex of St. Moritz Bad. Around 1900, it was dismantled and transported to Val Fex by horse-drawn carts. After 60 years in the same family, it was acquired in May 2010 by Dr. Marc and Lotte Bär-Schilder. Church of St. Margaret in Fex Crasta (Evangelical) The church was likely built around 1500. It is first mentioned in 1506 as a house of worship dedicated to St. Margaret. A simple rectangular building with a semicircular chancel and a brick bell tower above the southeast front, its Baroque appearance resulting from an elevation in the 17th century. The brick wall surrounding the church was added with the establishment of a cemetery in the post-Reformation period. A simple hall church with a flat-roofed rectangular nave and a domed apse. The chancel contains frescoes in the Upper Italian style dating from 1511. According to an inscription, the gallery was installed in 1665; the coffered ceiling above the nave also dates from the 17th century. A simple polygonal pulpit dates from 1721. The stained-glass window "Lamentation of Christ" is by Ernst Rinderspacher (1879–1949). Gallery organ, built in 1981 (Felsberg Organ Builders). Sils Maria is a historic village in the Engadine, known for its connection to Friedrich Nietzsche and its cultural significance. In the beautiful Engadine village of Sils, at 1802 meters above sea level, everything is a little more intense: the tranquility, the changing seasons, the light, nature – happiness. Vacationers who found St. Moritz too hectic continued on to Sils Maria. That's how it was a hundred years ago; and that's how it still is today. It's palpable at every turn: those who come to Sils want to nourish their souls. And in doing so, they want to experience the warmth of a small village with around 810 inhabitants, where tourism has a long tradition and has been a way of life for over 100 years. Two Hearts, One Soul Sils Maria and Sils Baselgia: Our village has two names because it comprises two settlements. Sils Baselgia grew up around the Church of San Lurench. It was first mentioned in 1356 and still stands today. "Baselgia" is derived from basilica (church). In Sils Maria, the larger of the two villages, the large dairy farm once stood. The name "Maria" refers not to a proper name, but to the term "dairy farm." "Sils" means something like "green meadow" or "long strip of land." This also referred to the Sils lake plain. It is still a "green meadow"—thanks to landscape and nature conservation efforts and the awareness of these values that the people of Sils possess. Lambrecht Weather Column, Sils A measuring station was put into operation as early as 1863, and the systematic measurement of meteorological parameters began. This makes the Sils weather series one of the longest in the entire Alpine region and highly valuable for observing climate change. The stations were located at various points throughout the village.
