Church of San Valeriano

Celtic crosses in the Piedmont countryside. A tiny corner of Ireland ☘️

The church of S. Valeriano was part of an ancient Cluniac priory from the 11th century. The grandeur of its structure is an indication of the importance of its function on the European routes to France and Northern Europe and in the opposite direction to Rome, the so-called “Via Francigena or Romea”.

Medieval monument in Robbio (12th century), it has preserved its simple Romanesque decoration. Entirely in terracotta, it stood near the gate of San Pietro, on the road to Mortara, and there was an adjoining hospital, mentioned in the chronicles as early as the 13th century.

The first documents mentioning it date back to 1440, but the church certainly has an earlier layout, built in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves.

The church, commonly called the Madonnina, was built in 1764 and after several renovations was restored in 1910: on this occasion the façade was also rebuilt. Inside there is a well-made fresco from the sixteenth century depicting the Virgin with the Child on her knees.

On the edge of a natural terrace of the Sesia river, in a short side street from Piazza Vodano you can admire the beautiful and solid tower that in ancient times was part of the medieval castle known as Torre dei Visconti, dating from the twelfth century. In compact red bricks, it has a square plan and is crowned by split battlements resting on a triple motif of sawtooth stones. In ancient times, a few small windows on either side served as light connections. The building was probably connected to the early medieval castrum of which traces have been lost: documents dating from the eleventh and thirteenth centuries indicate the fortified complex "Castro della torre".
