When the lake is ice-free and there is no wind, the mirror-smooth surface of the lake, with the picturesque pyramid of the Matterhorn in it, is one of the most popular photo motifs in Switzerland. The image at Riffelsee differs from the Matterhorn reflections in Stellisee and Grindjisee in its extraordinary perspective: While the other two lakes show the world-famous north face of the Matterhorn, Riffelsee reflects the east wall. The Riffelsee is not directly visible from the Gornergrat Rotenboden train station, but is easily accessible in just under 10 minutes on foot downhill. For the perfect photo, it should be as calm as possible. Be careful on the shore, climbing on stones also causes waves. There is no wind and therefore a flat water surface, especially early in the morning and late in the evening.
