The Mellental valley stretches for a long time in a deep mountain gorge behind Mellau and finally ends at about the same elevation as the Hohes Licht mountain.

Be sure to allow yourself a detour to the Wälderbähnle (forest railway). It's a fantastic historical experience.

You don't drive to Schröcken. You find yourself there again – as if after a long journey that wasn't planned, but necessary. The village lies there as if painted, and yet there is something unobtrusive, almost shy about it – as if it doesn't want to make a big deal, even though the surrounding mountains seem like backdrops from a dramatic play. The church with its slender, upright tower stands like an exclamation point in the landscape that no one has spoken aloud. It says: Here I am – and I'm staying. Behind it, wooden houses with shutters and geraniums crouch, like something from a childhood story you never quite outgrew. In front of it: grass swaying in the wind and a road that looks as if it's in no hurry. Schröcken doesn't mean: You have to experience something here. Schröcken means: You're welcome to be here. Hikers pass by, drifting along, between the Lechquellenrunde and Körbersee, between peaks with names like Mohnenspitze and Juppenkante. And when you return—perhaps after a long day on the ridge—the village is still there. Unruffled. Unadulterated.
