The current Basilica Sanctuary was built recently (1957-1979), but the history surrounding the cult is much older, dating back to the late eighth and early ninth centuries. A ship coming from the East, loaded with goods, including a statue of the Virgin Mary that had escaped iconoclastic persecution, was forced to dock by a violent storm. The sailors were forced to disembark, but the ship remained motionless. So the occupants decided to lighten the load, leaving the chest containing the statue of the Madonna Bruna on shore, among other items. The ship set sail again and continued its journey. We did the hike with our dog. From the campsite under the railway, then under the motorway and shortly afterwards follow the signpost. Steep climb but doable. In between, wonderful views and a place to take a break

The Santuario Santa Maria de Tindari is the famous pilgrimage church with the Black Madonna. The church was built in the 1950s and here the Black Madonna is worshiped by Tindari. Tradition has it that after a sudden burst of images, the picture of grace from Constantinople was washed ashore in a box. The black Madonna can be seen in the back smaller church.

From Oliveri there is a well-developed, but very steep path up to the monastery of the "Black Madonna" - an important Sicilian pilgrimage site. Behind it lies a large excavation site. Nice views over the coast!
