Spadafora Castle, or Samonà Castle, is an imposing fortification built in the late 16th century around a medieval tower. It served as a noble residence, but also as a base for coastal control. Today, it belongs to the Sicilian Region and is open to visitors.

In the course of its history, Messina not only experienced heydays and destruction under the changing rulers. Heavy earthquakes in 1783 and 1908 and bombing raids in World War II repeatedly destroyed large parts of the city. Today Messina is one of the economic and cultural centers of Sicily.

The church of the Santissima Annunziata was a church in the city of Messina. Built in 1607, it was embellished in 1660 by Guarino Guarini. It was destroyed, in part, by the earthquake of 1783. Restored and open to worship, in 1796, it was destroyed, along with the adjacent Teatini college since the 1908 earthquake.It occupied the current area of the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate on Corso Cavour.

The Church of the Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani dates back to the 12th century, when Sicily was under Norman rule. It is in fact one of the examples of Norman architecture in Sicily as well as one of the few buildings in the city to have resisted earthquakes over the centuries.

More than 400 aquatic species live within the nature reserve, of which at least ten are endemic.

Messina is a Sicilian port city, famous for its Duomo and the Strait. From here the ferries leave for the Peninsula.
