John Brinckman is one of the important writers who wrote their works in their native Low German, alongside Klaus Groth (1819–1899) and Fritz Reuter (1810–1874). In his hometown of Rostock, not only a fountain and a street were named in his honor, but also an entire district, Brinckmansdorf.

The stone gate was first built in 1270 as a Gothic gate. It was once said to have been as big as the Kröpelin Gate. It was the main gate to Rostock's old town and led directly to the market square with the town hall.
