The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Carate Brianza is located in the hamlet of Agliate: this is why it is known as the Basilica of Agliate. Dating back to the early 11th century, it is a Romanesque basilica, attributable to the Ottonian architectural tradition (Ottonian art is that which extends from 887, the beginning of the Ottonian dynasty, to the year 1000). The walls are constructed of river pebbles and ashlars, bound with mortar. The façade is salient and reflects the three-nave structure, each with an entrance door. The central nave is raised above the side naves.

Stunning; stop and see it. Inside, it's very unique, made entirely of stone. The bell tower, which you can admire on the right, is also beautiful.

The Rossini Art Site sculpture collection is set up in a large park in the hills of Brianza. The position of the works, mostly sculptures and installations created by the great masters of Italian and international sculpture of the twentieth century, is the result of a project that aims to enrich and at the same time respect the territorial context: both the figurative and abstract works blend together and with the nature that surrounds them. Equally fundamental, in this perspective, are the pedestrian paths that wind through the area, which allow the visitor to correctly enjoy the sculptures while constantly immersed in the green panorama of the Brianza hills. The Park therefore presents itself as a true open-air museum of contemporary art, with a strong naturalistic and environmental value, in which there is a perfect integration between artistic expression, natural territory and contemporary architecture.

The façade is pedimented: the only central access, framed by two pairs of pilasters, is located on a slightly recessed surface delimited by an arch in whose lunette there is a pictorial decoration and the inscription "SANCTE MARTINE ORA PRO NOBIS". The façade is completed by a tympanum crowned by a metal cross, inside which there is a frieze with the inscription DOM. At the back left is the bell tower. Inside, the hall, covered by barrel vaults, has no other spatial divisions, but has several side chapels. The presbytery is raised and closed by a semicircular apse. The wall decorations cover almost all the internal surfaces, but the figurative paintings are limited to some curves on the vaults and springs in the apse basin. On the counterfaçade there is a wooden tribune with an organ.

The Basilica of Agliate and its Baptistery, built shortly after the year 1000, constitute one of the most recent testimonies of the nascent Roman architectural style which would spread throughout Europe in the following decades. Consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul, the church has an interior with three naves separated by two rows of columns with reused capitals. In particular, the second column on the left is made from a Roman milestone on which the original inscriptions can still be seen.

I have always done it downhill also because at the top there are steps that can be tackled easily, uphill pushing by hand is inevitable 😜

A shortcut that cuts towards the Monza-Erba cycle path, very steep on cobblestones, the first stretch has steps recommended to be followed downhill, watch out for the bottom.
