Walking through the gate into the castle grounds of Valvasone means taking many steps back in time to the Middle Ages.

The municipality of Valvasone Arzene is listed among the most beautiful towns in Italy thanks to the excellent state of preservation of its historic center, which boasts several stately homes dating from the 14th to 17th centuries. The most important architectural feature is the castle, surrounded by a moat and the old city walls. Also worth seeing is an old mill, which still retains its 15th-century wheel.

Beautiful old town

The church of Santa Margherita has very ancient origins. On the right side, some terracotta elements outline a segmental arch that was later bricked up, indicating that the arch was once part of the roof of a much older building. The church dates back to the 15th century but has undergone several restorations and expansions. The last structural interventions date back to 1977. The wooden altar dates back to the early 17th century and houses an altarpiece depicting Saint Margaret between Saints Roch and Sebastian, a work by Pomponio Amalteo. The presbytery is enriched with scenes of the Apostles by artists from the school of Pietro da San Vito. On the back wall, the Annunciation and several apostles are attributed to Gaspare Narvesa.
