Wilhelm Tarant built the Brunnenburg around 1250 on a glacial rubble cone below Schloss Tirol. It got its name from the nearby spring. The castle, which fell into ruin over the centuries, was reborn at the beginning of the 20th century, and this is how the visitor encounters it today. The former residence of the American poet Ezra Pound (1885 to 1972) now houses the agricultural museum, which gives an insight into the life of South Tyrolean farmers and mountain farmers and into old trades.

Schenna is an Italian municipality with 2916 inhabitants in South Tyrol. It is about three kilometers north-east of Meran and about 25 kilometers north-west of Bozen, just opposite Dord Tirol. Worth seeing is the castle and the church with the mausoleum. From here you can hike wonderfully to Meran.

Castle Tyrol was once the seat of the Counts of Tyrol, who died out in 1253, and today represents one of the symbols of the state. It gave its name to the state of Tyrol, which came into being under Count Meinhard II in the 13th century. The ring wall, built around 1100, is one of the oldest surviving castle walls. Around 1140, the Counts of Tyrol extended the complex as a residence and soon became the most important castle in all of Tyrol. Tirol Castle experienced its heyday under Countess Margarete von Tirol, known as "Maultasch", which ended when she abdicated and the residence of the Counts of Tirol was moved to Innsbruck. The complex still towers majestically high above Meran on a mighty moraine hill. The impressive portals of the palace and the castle chapel have been preserved as remains. Inside the chapel there are also numerous early Gothic frescoes, the oldest glass paintings in Tyrol and a larger-than-life crucifixion group. Above the entrance to the chapel, on the other hand, you can see the oldest preserved depiction of the Tyrolean eagle from the 13th century. Renovations were only carried out in the castle in the 20th century. Finally, in 2003, the South Tyrolean Museum for Cultural and Regional History opened its doors. On 20 levels, it vividly describes the history of the state of Tyrol from its beginnings to the present day. Right next to the castle is also the "care center for bird fauna Castle Tyrol", which regularly offers flight demonstrations. And how can Castle Tirol be reached? From the village center (paid parking) the Schlossweg takes you through an old tunnel and past the earth pyramids of Dorf Tirol to the castle (30 minutes). Driving is prohibited on the way.

When visiting Dorf Tirol, men/women/children should definitely make the small detour if they want to strengthen themselves. A somewhat more unusual menu, especially the sweet dumplings are particularly tasty and rarely offered elsewhere.

Tyrol Castle, the ancestral seat of the Counts of Tyrol (Counts of Vinschgau), sits enthroned on a mighty castle hill. Not only the nearby village of Tyrol, but the whole country is shaped by the history of this castle, which gave the state of Tyrol its name. The first building was built around 1100.
