Bergamo Alta (Upper Bergamo) is located on a hill overlooking the plains of the province of Bergamo. On clear days, you can see the Apennines and, even better, the Lombardy capital, Milan. But above all, Città Alta (Upper Bergamo) is beautiful to visit (on weekdays) for its history. It is a city surrounded by Venetian walls and boasting historic churches and palaces.

The Visconti Citadel in Bergamo Alta is a quadrangular fortress built in the 14th century by Bernabò Visconti to consolidate his dominion over the territory and control the city. It housed the military garrison and tax collection offices, with spaces such as the Hospitium Magnum, now home to important civic museums. The citadel was a symbol of the Visconti family's power and served as a military garrison, integrating with other fortifications in the upper city.

Monastery of Santa Grata

The Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Campi in Brignano Gera d'Adda (BG) is a 17th-century place of worship nestled in the countryside. The sanctuary is known for a marble statue of the Virgin and Child crushing the devil, attributed to the Fantoni group, and for a polychrome altar from 1725–1727. The sanctuary's history is linked to legends of apparitions or miraculous relocations of a pre-existing statue, although its origins date back to earlier periods.

Here, within its walls, the poet Petrarch stayed as a guest several times. And within its walls, a very young Francesco Bernardino Visconti, known to all as "the Unnamed," grew up, entrusted to his uncle, the archpriest Galeazzo Visconti, in 1595. Today, it hosts conferences, theater and music festivals, sculpture symposia, and educational workshops.
