The name Mattenstatt likely preserves the memory of the Matton family, a significant family in the early Middle Ages, and probably initially referred to a farm that passed to Fulda Abbey and was co-administered by its branch, the Holzkirchen provostship. The "Battle of Mattenstatt" represents a decisive event. An important testimony to this battle and the monastery is the foundation stone of the Mattenstatt Chapel, split in two and embedded in the outer wall of the choir of the Rothenfels parish church. The inscription on this stone allows for various datings and interpretations depending on how it is read. There is much evidence for a dating of the battle to 1210 and for an antagonism between the two prince-bishops of Würzburg and Mainz. Mattenstatt, as a monastic settlement, owes its existence to this battle and a chapel built in its memory. After the battle, the name Mattenstatt also came to mean "Mordstadt" (place of murder). The original census records the place name "Mordenstadt" (Mordenstadt). The chapel was consecrated in 1226; Mattenstatt is first documented as a "monastery" on April 28, 1324. It wasn't until the 15th century that a monk from Holzkirchen Monastery was permanently present in Mattenstatt. Reconstruction work, as evidenced by the Mattenstatt stones, probably began in 1411. After 1558, monastic life ended. The monastery and its land were sold by Fulda to the Bishopric of Würzburg and used in 1575 to equip the hospital in Rothenfels, founded by Julius Echter. The parish church in Rothenfels, built in 1610/12 and also the hospital church, used the abandoned buildings as a quarry. The statues of the saints venerated in the monastery church, St. Blaise and St. Eucharius, were probably transferred to the church in Hafenlohr immediately after the dissolution. The name Hafenlohr originates from the ancient Germanic root word "lara" and originally referred to a natural pasture.

Many interpretations of the monastery's name refer to entries in historical maps, according to which the area is referred to as "Mordenstatt." A battle is said to have taken place on this site in the 13th century, presumably pitting the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg and Mainz, with their vassals, the Franconian noble families, against each other. However, it is likely that the name Mattenstatt derives from the Matton family, a family important in the early Middle Ages. A chapel was built on this site at the beginning of the 13th century and consecrated in 1226. Mattenstatt is first documented as a "monastery" on April 28, 1324. Mattenstatt was subordinate to the Holzkirchen Monastery. New construction and the expansion of the chapel probably took place in 1411. Two inscribed stones, which provide evidence of the expansion and ultimately the founding of the monastery, were incorporated into the corner ashlar of the Rothenfels parish church after the dissolution of the monastery in 1558. This was preceded by the sale of the monastery and its land from Fulda to the Bishopric of Würzburg. The statues of the saints venerated in the monastery church, St. Blaise and St. Eucharius, were probably moved to the church in Hafenlohr immediately after the dissolution. A few remains of the walls were discovered during archaeological excavations in the 1990s, which formed the basis for the creation of a model of Mattenstatt Monastery.
