The boundary between the districts of Laufenselden and the state border between Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. The name is used by the Aar loop "Freistaat Flaschenhals" (Free State Bottleneck) because the border also ran here during the occupation period after World War I.

Near the hilltop there is a comfortable lounger, from which the view of Laufenselden and the Hintertaunus region is particularly appealing.

Beautiful forest area and a real relaxation, especially on hot summer days.

When we were there, they were setting up a play. The castle is beautiful, offers magnificent views, and I recommend climbing the towers.

The beautiful castle complex is open to the public during opening hours, and the towers are also accessible. A castle festival is also held in the summer. From the castle, there are—as you would expect—great views of the surrounding countryside.

Built of stone, high above stands the castle that once belonged to the counts. Derelict, forgotten – but now reborn, Hohenstein is once again becoming a magnificent castle. Once a knight's palace, now a ruin – but what a wonderful viewing platform! If you don't stop here, it's your own fault – the castle has charm, history, and patience.

🏰 Hohenstein Castle – History, Views & Departure The ruins of Hohenstein Castle rise majestically above the Aar Valley – a place steeped in history and atmosphere. First mentioned in the 12th century, it served as a border fortress, court, and administrative seat of the Counts of Nassau for centuries. Later, it fell into ruin – but never forgotten. After decades of decay, a breath of fresh air is once again blowing through the old walls: The castle has been gradually renovated over the past few years and opened to the public. Cultural events, guided tours, and a planned reopening as a tourist destination are revitalizing the monument. 🚴‍♂️ Cyclists and hikers will find a short detour up there worthwhile – the view of the Aar Valley and the fortified silhouette are magnificent. If you want to experience history, this is the place for you. 📜 Tip: If you look closely, you'll discover traces of medieval architecture and inscriptions in the stones.
