Here we see a piece of original Roman road construction. The exposed substructure of vertically installed rubble stone provides an impressive illustration of the effort put into it by the builders of that time. Of course, wagons didn't rumble over these stone peaks. At that time, the exposed stone substructure still had a layer of gravel, and on top of that, a finer surface material on which the wheels rolled well and horses could walk comfortably. A less developed Celtic trade route already ran along this route. Unlike today's road builders, Celts and Romans built highways on the dry hills and not in the then swampy valleys. Only in Patersberg does the old route reach the Rhine level, near today's supermarket, and lead to a ford downstream. The road was still in use until 1849, only then was it replaced by the route of the federal highway running through the valley. After that, the route began to become overgrown with bushes.
