The opening was cut into the tower later; the watchtower was at least two to three times higher and accessible only via a rope ladder. The watchtowers were connected to each other, and flags or torches signaled danger.

Today, it is privately owned but houses, among other things, a hotel and serves as a venue for the Jagsthausen Castle Festival, where Goethe's "Götz von Berlichingen" is performed annually on the open-air stage.
