Ancient headquarters of the Celestine Order. More recently used as a penitentiary, then abandoned. Now they are trying to bring it back to its former glory.

The Abbey of Santo Spirito al Morrone, better known as Badia Morronese, was for many centuries the main and famous settlement of the Celestines, and represented the vital center of the cultural, religious and civil life of the region. The monumental complex, extending over an area of 16,600 square meters, is located in the foothills of Morrone, in a territory that has always been sacred and in close relationship with the hermitage of S. Onofrio and the Sanctuary of Ercole Curino, both a few steps away on the mountain.

This place is a splendid oasis of tranquility, where the cave is located which was the first modest refuge of the hermit Pietro da Morrone, located on the slopes of the homonymous mountain. You can reach the hermitage through stairs carved into the rock. The climb itself is not too demanding given the modest difference in altitude. However, if the climb is still too tiring, you can travel most of the way by car and park a few meters from the hermitage.

The small village of Molina Aterno rises in the Subequana Valley, in the territory of the Sirente - Velino regional park. The place is characterized by an uncontaminated and luxuriant nature at the foot of Mount Sirente. Country of ancient origins, in the Italic era the populations of the "Peligni" and the "Vestini" prospered and left important traces with the ancient necropolis. The name of the village derives from the place that was equipped with mills since the Middle Ages thanks to the presence of the nearby river Aterno. From 1875 the town was characterized by the passage of the train snorting of the new Sulmona - L’Aquila railway line. Molina Aterno is an important crossroads of tradition, culture and nature between the Subequana Valley and the Middle - Lower Aterno Valley.

7月 17, 2020, Gole di San Venanzio
Established with regional law of 1998, the reserve embraces a territory rich in naturalistic emergencies. Morphologically it is divided into two completely different environments: the narrow limestone gorges upstream and the wide alluvial plain downstream, where one of the rare examples of river wood existing in Central Italy has been reconstituted. Connecting element, the waters of the Aterno river. Peculiarity of the reserve is the extraordinary balance between wild nature and the millenary presence of man. The rock paintings of Rava tagliata; the Roman aqueduct of the "ucchélle" which crosses the gorges on the right side of the valley along a tunnel carved into the rock; the surprising abundance of caves and natural shelters; the suggestion of the hermitage suspended over the river and of the votive shrines, memory of miracles for the faithful; the rural church of the Madonna di Contra: everything contributes to making the Gorges of San Venanzio a real place of the soul.

Ingresso : Libero
