The Mercadante Forest is a protected wooded area that extends for 1,300 hectares between the municipalities of Cassano delle Murge and Altamura. It was born in 1928 from a reforestation project after a flood, and hosts different species of trees, such as oaks, cedars and cypresses. It is the ideal place to cool off among the trees on hot summer days and take a break in one of the areas equipped with picnic tables.

From the countryside you can enjoy a beautiful view of the town of Altamura.

Here, in an abandoned quarry, very numerous (about 20,000) dinosaur footprints dating back to about 70 million years ago have been discovered. The footprints have proven to be well preserved and have now been sorted into a row. These are footprints of over 200 specimens of at least 5 different species.

The vegetation opens up and we can admire the panorama of the Alta Murgia National Park which extends for 677.4 square km.

The farmhouse, typical of these areas, is a set of rural buildings, often built in stone, used for various purposes including: housing, animal shelter and support for farms. Only the ruins remain of Masseria Persio today, but its structure can still be understood.
