The ferry is actually intended for hikers and hence the awkward access by bicycle.

The ferry is only partially suitable for translating with wheels. You have to heave the bikes over a fairly high step into the ferry. But it's doable (even with the heavy cheat bikes) and it's fun! A little training for the arms in between.
