A unique gem in Mecklenburg is the Dobbertin Monastery with its double-towered church, which was built based on a Schinkel model. The former monastery, founded in 1220 by the Benedictines, housed nuns from 1237 onwards. In 1572 it was converted into a noble women's convent. In 1857 the completion of the church reconstruction by G. A. Demmler based on plans by Schinkel was celebrated. Since 1960, mentally handicapped and mentally ill people have been cared for in the historic buildings. In 1991 the Diakoniewerk took over the sponsorship. Today the listed area is also a popular meeting place for day trippers and art lovers. From May to September, guided tours of the monastery grounds take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 3 p.m. An educational trail leads through the park adjacent to the monastery, which has some dendrological treasures. In the monastery café with a view of the lake you can treat yourself to coffee, cake, ice cream or a small snack. The current mill house on Dobbertiner lake was built before 1755 by the monastery office. According to available plans from 1790, the old watermill was located next to the Müller apartment on the Mildenitz. Off to the side stood the big barn, the horse stable and a livestock house. Because of the frequent fire hazards, only the bakehouse was built on the opposite side of the Mildenitzbach. Today, the inn-hotel Insel-Hotel, opened in 2009, is located here.
