The Schwarze Schöps, or Čorny Šepc in Upper Sorbian, is a 67 km long, right-hand or eastern tributary of the Spree in the Görlitz district. The development of the Schwarze Schöps is closely linked to lignite mining in Lusatia. In the municipality of Boxberg, it serves as the outflow channel of the Bärwalde reservoir (Bärwalder See), which also serves as a feedwater reservoir for the Boxberg power plant. At the height of the Boxberg power plant, a total of 120,000 cubic meters of water per day are extracted from the Schwarze Schöps and the Spree to cool the power plant steam. Finally, the confluence with the Spree was also changed due to the rerouting of the Spree's course for the Nochten open-cast mine.

The section between the confluence of the White Schöps River near the Boxberg district of Reichwalde and its confluence with the Spree River near Sprey is known not only as the Black Schöps but also as the United Schöps or simply as Schöps. This short stretch of river lies entirely within the municipality of Boxberg/O.L. In Boxberg itself, the Schöps serves as the outflow channel of Lake Bärwalde.

The beach bar at Boxberg Beach has a good selection of snacks and drinks at reasonable prices. It is closed in winter, however. The beach area near the "Markise" is also beautifully decorated.
